We Have A Green Brigade Shaped Problem

It's becoming almost tedious now. Big European occasion at Celtic Park, UEFA sanction for banner flown in Green Brigade section.

The Green Brigade bring a lot of positives to the club. They create so much noise and colour. They create an amazing atmosphere (most of the time). They do a lot of work for charidee (and they *do* like to talk about it).

But it has to be said that along with the positives comes one pretty serious negative.

They cannot be trusted not to bring the club to the attention of UEFA with attention-seeking, provocative "political" displays at every conceivable opportunity.

They have to realise, surely, that UEFA will not restrict themselves to fines for Celtic indefinitely? Sooner or later, if they don't stop with the self-indulgent political nonsense, UEFA are going to close a stand at Celtic Park for an important European match.

This "ultras" group, which is supposed to be about supporting Celtic, is going to end up hurting Celtic.

They concoct so many excuses for what they do. So many reasons to feel aggrieved at UEFA for enforcing their own competition rules, and none of them actually hold any water.

We hear about how they are somehow honouring Celtic's origins with their left-wing, faux-Irish Republican displays. As if the founders of Celtic were Marxist agitators whose purpose was to raise the class-consciousness of the proletariat of Glasgow's East End, rather than to raise funds to feed the poor.

Or Irish Republican Brotherhood operatives infiltrating Scottish football in order to bring about an independent Republic, at a time when the Irish Nationalist movement was focused on Home Rule. Brother Walfrid may well have enjoyed a rousing rendition of God Save Ireland, but that in no way means he would have approved of taunting Linfield fans with a banner glorifying the IRA.

It is ahistorical nonsense to justify left-wing and/or Irish Republican displays on the basis of the founders of the club and their motives. I've read so many times over the past 24 hours the claim that Celtic was, "born out of politics."

Celtic's founders did so not to seek election to political office, or to influence government policy. They were acting out of Catholic charity.

Our founders were not the kind of people who wanted the state to help the poor, they were the kind of people who got up off their backsides and did it themselves because that's what their Catholic faith taught them to do.

So if the Green Brigade and friends are so keen to express pride in our origins, when can we expect them to wave Rosary beads and Sacred Heart banners at opposition fans?

That's a rhetorical question of course, I very much doubt many of them could tell you what the First Sorrowful Mystery is, never mind own a set of Rosary beads.

It's The Agony in the Garden for anyone who's interested, or for fans old enough to remember the late 1940's, whoever was playing outside right that day - Hibernian had the Famous Five up front, we had The Five Sorrowful Mysteries.

But I digress. The understanding these people have of our origins as a club is seriously flawed but it hardly matters in the context of what is and is not acceptable in UEFA competition.

The actual rule UEFA have is against banners "not fit for a sporting occasion."

So let's forget about what our founders stood for (or what you think they stood for). When you fly a banner glorifying paramilitaries (and spare me the wounded innocence, they knew exactly what they were doing), UEFA are going to hammer that and no one should be in any doubt about it.

This is not about our identity, or our right to political expression. It's about Celtic playing in UEFA competition and UEFA having rules which we all need to abide by.

It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks of UEFA's rules. We know by now (or we should know by now) that UEFA enforce their rules. So please Green Brigade, spare us your pointless, needless student union political posturing.

We're not all left wing politicians. We're not all Irish Republicans. We're not all of Irish descent. We're not all Catholics. The only thing that unites us is a love of Celtic. Let's focus on that.

  1. What a lot of nonsense ,what has religion to do with anything that the GB do ? The club with their insistence of refusing to challenge any charges leaves them wide open to slapping fines for the least problem.
Our club is inherently linked to republicanism since Davithe laid the first sod of grass at CP and we all know that it's not for everyone but each to their own .
The sit down shut up brigade don't want to upset pistol Pete and good on the GB for bringing a bit of pisstake to football.
I'm sure if you were at the game you would have been holding your hands up in outrage at the BBB being sang by 75% of the support who aren't all GB and your comment about their charity work should be hailed by everyone Inc the GB and the club but I'm sure the Foundation comes first to you and your happy clappers ( when you can be arsed )

    1. Michael Davitt was better known for his Land League activities than for his early involvement with the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

His laying a sod of turf at Celtic Park in no way makes the club Republican or inherently linked to it. He was a sitting Member of Parliament and his funeral was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, so it's a bit of a stretch to claim a link with Davitt makes Celtic Republican.

What has religion to do with it? Our club was founded by practising Catholics, motivated by their Catholicism, so Celtic is far more inherently linked to Catholicism than it is to Irish Republicanism. The first patron of the club was the Archbishop of Glasgow!

The Green Brigade banner on Wednesday night went WAY beyond a piss take. It crossed UEFA's line and there's no way Celtic were not being punished for it.

There's no point in Celtic trying to fight a charge of flying a banner not fit for a sporting occasion, because that's exactly what the Green Brigade did.

If you don't like UEFA's rules, don't buy tickets for their competition because when you do you accept those rules.

And don't cry when you break those rules and they are enforced.

    5. James,

Celtic was founded by a Marist Brother, to raise funds for a Catholic charity.

The founders of Celtic were described by the club as, "Catholic laymen."

The first Patron of Celtic was Archbishop Ayers of Glasgow, and the clergy of the Archdiocese.

The club's first circular stated that its purpose was to fund the Poor Children's Dinner Table and to provide "the Catholic young men" of Glasgow with recreational facilities.

It further stated that several of the leading Catholic footballers of the day had committed to play for the club.

If you think Catholicism had nothing to do with Celtic then it is YOU who is deluded my friend.

Now, could you tell me what politics had to do with Celtic's founding?

  2. I agree 100% with you Daniel, the bottom line is it is harming the club the GB profess to love,a lot of money in fines has gone into uefa pockets that could have gone to charity or helped buy a player,we can to without it,its uefa's competition, its their rules,if we want yo be in it,we have to abide by their rules.

    1. And eventually, we'll have a stand closure if they don't grow up and accept UEFA's rules.

    1. We're about the same age and this attempt to impose their politics on the rest of us is my main gripe with the Green Brigade.

It seems to me left wing politics is more important to them than supporting Celtic.

  4. And yet Nelson Mandela was deified in banners and such upon his death. You can not have it both ways. UEFA is a money grabbing shower of bastards and if they saw a sign that said I love milk they would find a reason to fine us too. Hey Celtic rather than pander to the Orange leaning media and suits in this country that pollute our game and clearly some in our own organization, How about take on the elephant in the room...

The real elephant and that is the stripping of titles and to bring down the suits in this game that ruin it without fear of recrimination. You want fans on your side start listening to us, start treating us with respect. Remember it us who give you the privilege of your position at OUR CLUB. without us there is no you. Do that and see what kind of cooperation you get from the supporters in the end. THE GB will be here long after we've said goodbye to you. Hail Hail.

    1. UEFA can do whatever they like in their competitions. Bottom line is, they have rules and enforce them so deliberately doing that is lunacy.

Title stripping is a separate matter and should happen, but we could be focussing on that but for the Green Brigade yet again bringing UEFA down on us with a needless political stunt.

    2. Daniel, you are right, Celtic was founded to provide young Catholic's from a financially poor back ground with recreational facilities. You are wrong in your assertion that Brother Walfred distinguish between the poor of any faith when it came to the distribution of amenities or funds. No sir, his political ideology only allow him to see recognise people of need, not faith. That ideology is reserved for bigots. Political will of the day enforced a 2 tier working class society where, the Catholic minority found themself removed from there country of origin and forced into slums where they came face to face with an indigenous population primed to resent their presence. This was to promote cheaper labour for the industrialization of the empire. Celtic fc rose to prominence to ease the suffering in it small way for it's parish of people who had fell victim to this new age conscript! Very political in it origin I would suggest!

    3. Hi Bernie,

I've never said Brother Walfrid distinguished between the poor of any faith.

I would say though that he had no political ideology. His concern for the poor was born from his Catholic faith.

Nothing about Celtic's founding was political in any way. It was charitable.

  8. I've emailed Celtic with a very similar response. I can remember only too well the dark days of playing behind closed doors, heavy fines, finger pointing from the other clubs, etc. Its hard to defend certain sections of the fans when they behave in such a bigoted manner. Another major concern for me, is its the lure of playing in Europe that has brought a genius of a manager to the club, who in turn has signed some fantastic players. If we continue to disgrace ourselves in the manner that has become an all to often occurrence, we risk losing the manager, team stars and the feel good factor that is once again within the Celtic family.
I enjoy the atmosphere that the Green Brigade initiate, but I'm more than happy to do without it if it means maintaining all that has been achieved over the past year.
Behave yourselves GB and you'll have the support of the fans, but continue in this vein and I'll continue to canvass the club to have you removed.
